The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
